NDMA announces Tarbela dam spillways now open

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced that Tarbela Dam’s spillways were opened at 8:00 am on Monday.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh warning about possible flooding in the Indus River and adjoining rivers and drains as water flow may reach up to 250000 cusecs after the opening of spillways. In its statement, the authority urged residents of nearby areas to remain alert to the rising water levels and to adopt safety precautions. People living in low-lying areas have been specifically advised to stay away from riverbanks and other water bodies. The NDMA also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the local administration and strictly follow safety guidelines.

Authorities have been directed to keep local communities informed about the latest situation. Relief teams and disaster management officials are already on standby to deal with any emergency. The warning comes after the Flood Forecasting Division reported that Tarbela Dam has reached its maximum conservation level of 1550 feet. The live storage of the dam is now completely filled, creating pressure on spillway operations to manage the excess inflow.

Experts caution that further water discharge from Tarbela could raise flood risks downstream, especially in areas located along the Indus and its connected streams and drains. NDMA has also assured that close coordination is being maintained with provincial disaster management bodies to minimize damage. Citizens have been urged to move to safer places if needed and to remain in contact with rescue services.

The alert highlights the increasing pressure on Pakistan’s water reservoirs during the monsoon season, with authorities emphasizing preparedness as a key factor in reducing losses in case of severe flooding.
