NDMA issues heatwave and flood alerts for Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for severe heat and potential heatwaves from March to September, urging vigilance across Pakistan.

Officials highlighted that northern regions are particularly vulnerable due to melting glaciers, which could trigger severe flooding in the coming weeks. Areas at high risk include Ahmedabad, Faizabad, Gulmit, and the Ashkoman Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, regions such as Kumrat have also been identified as flood-prone zones. The NDMA has urged provincial disaster management authorities, local rescue teams, and district administrations to prepare emergency plans and ensure that warning systems remain fully operational.

Authorities emphasized that public cooperation is essential to reduce casualties and prevent property damage. Residents have been advised to strictly follow instructions from local officials, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay alert during this period of high risk. In addition, the NDMA recommended monitoring local weather updates and keeping emergency supplies ready, including food, drinking water, and medical kits. Evacuation plans should be in place for communities living near rivers and glacier-fed streams, as sudden water surges can occur without warning. The warning comes at a time when climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in the country.

Officials stressed the importance of preparedness, stating that early action and public awareness can significantly reduce the impact of heatwaves and floods. Authorities also called on citizens to report any signs of rising water levels or landslides to local disaster management teams immediately. By staying vigilant and following official guidance, communities can ensure their safety and protect their property during this challenging period.
