The main causes of air pollution in Punjab were detailed in a recent report published by the provincial government’s Urban Unit.
The research states that burning agricultural waste, vehicle exhaust, and industrial pollutants are the main causes of air pollution.
According to the report, vehicles that release smoke are the main source of air pollution, accounting for an astounding 83.15% of all emissions.
With 9.07% of dangerous pollutants released into the atmosphere, factories and power plants rank among the worst offenders.
The Urban Unit research states that burning agricultural waste contributes significantly to air pollution levels, but this is far less common than is typically thought.
While the incineration of general waste adds 3.6% to total pollution levels, the burning of agricultural residue adds 3.9%.
As per the report, home activities contribute 0.11% to the amount of air pollution, whilst commercial building activities account for 0.14%.
