Pak-India conflict was minutes away: Trump

Expressing pride in halting eight wars across the globe, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that he stopped a war from “restarting” between nuclear-armed neighbours, Pakistan and India.

He made these remarks during a joint meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office, where he discussed what he described as eight international crises he had brought back from the brink of disaster. During the meeting, Trump claimed that the situation in South Asia had become extremely dangerous earlier this year. He said that tensions between Pakistan and India were reaching a point where a serious conflict could have erupted if he had not intervened at the right moment.

According to him, both countries are now moving in a better direction and showing more restraint. The tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors escalated after an attack on tourists in occupied Kashmir in May 2025. The attack killed 26 people, and India immediately blamed Pakistan. Islamabad rejected the accusations and demanded an impartial investigation, saying that India was using the incident for political pressure.

Soon after, both sides engaged in four days of military clashes. Pakistan shot down several Indian fighter jets and drones during the confrontation. A ceasefire was reached on May 10, and diplomatic efforts — led mainly by the United States — helped bring the situation under control.

Trump’s latest comments suggest that India had been considering another aggressive move against Pakistan, but US involvement halted the escalation. His remarks also highlight Washington’s continued influence in easing tensions in South Asia despite ongoing political shifts in the region. The situation between Pakistan and India remains sensitive, but officials believe that recent diplomatic engagement has helped prevent another dangerous standoff.
