Pakistan must win big to stay in T20 World Cup race

Pakistan’s semi-final hopes in the ICC T20 World Cup now depend on a must-win clash against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.

After New Zealand defeated England, Pakistan faced a high-pressure situation where only a big win could keep them in contention. Shaheen Afridi is likely to retain his place after an impressive performance against England. With the team planning to play two specialist seamers, a direct contest remains between Naseem Shah and Salman Mirza for the second pace spot.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s batting lineup may see adjustments as the team management evaluates whether to include Babar Azam or Khawaja Nafay in the crucial game. The probable Pakistan line-up includes Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha as captain, Babar Azam or Khawaja Nafay, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Usman Khan as wicketkeeper, Mohammad Nawaz or Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi, Salman Mirza or Naseem Shah, and Usman Tariq.

Sri Lanka, despite criticism after their heavy loss to New Zealand, are unlikely to make major changes. Kusal Mendis is doubtful due to hamstring stiffness, and Kamil Mishara is expected to return as wicketkeeper-batter. The probable Sri Lankan line-up includes Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Charith Asalanka, Pavan Rathnayake, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka as captain, Dushan Hemantha, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dilshan Madushanka.

New Zealand currently hold a superior net run rate of 1.390 compared to Pakistan’s -0.461. For Pakistan to qualify, they must either beat Sri Lanka by around 64 runs or chase any target in about 13.1 overs. These precise numbers make the match a high-stakes encounter where every run, wicket, and over will determine Pakistan’s World Cup journey. Fans and analysts agree that Pakistan must play aggressively, balancing risk and reward, if they want to keep their semi-final dream alive.
