A petition has been filed in the Indian Supreme Court demanding a ban on the Pakistan-India Asia Cup 2025 match scheduled to be held in the UAE.
According to Indian media, the petition was lodged by Pune-based activist Ketan Tirudkar. He argued that with the current hostilities between India and Pakistan, cricket matches between the two countries are inappropriate. Additionally, the petition asserts that a match represented a violation of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which affords the region’s citizens the right to life and liberty. The hearing will take place on September 12 before a bench led by the Chief Justice of India.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been very clear. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said that India plays in multinational tournaments based on government policy, and that the refusal to play against one country in an international tournament would affect Indian sports in the international environment.
Furthermore, Saikia then explained that India does not play bilateral series with countries with which it has issues, but different countries participating in a multi-national tournament is another matter. If India were to boycott matches in a multi-national tournament, then the likelihood of international sanctions or bans could increase, impacting players and teams across sports.
Thus, while the legal petition has sparked a debate, BCCI has stated that India will play all the teams, including Pakistan, as part of the Asia Cup. The final decision, however, now depends on the Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing, which will determine whether the match will proceed as planned or face legal hurdles.
