Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday departed for Egypt to participate in the signing ceremony of the Gaza Peace Agreement on the special invitation of US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President.
The summit aims to finalize a peace agreement to end the ongoing humanitarian crisis and violence in Gaza. According to the Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with senior ministers, will accompany the premier during his visit. The upcoming summit in Sharm El-Sheikh follows Pakistan’s continued diplomatic efforts, in collaboration with Muslim countries, during the 80th UN General Assembly session last month to promote lasting peace in Gaza.
Last month, PM Shehbaz attended a high-level meeting with several Muslim and Arab leaders, including those from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Indonesia, and Turkiye, alongside President Trump. The countries collectively welcomed the US initiative for peace in Gaza and pledged to work together for a sustainable ceasefire and improved humanitarian conditions in the region. The Foreign Office said the prime minister’s participation reflects Pakistan’s firm and historic support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Pakistan remains committed to peace and stability in the Middle East.
Islamabad hopes the summit will lead to a complete Israeli withdrawal, protection of Palestinian civilians, and reconstruction of Gaza. The statement further expressed optimism that these efforts will help achieve an independent and viable State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders and in accordance with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
