The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that all unregistered mobile devices will be blocked from accessing local networks.
According to the PTA, unregistered handsets pose security risks as someone may misappropriate the device to use it in cybercrimes or financial fraud. PTA indicated that as per current laws, keeping, selling or using any unregistered device is against the law and punishable. The authority further advised the public not to buy or sell such handsets since they are not verified in the official system and cannot be legally operated. Using unregistered phones will result not only in suspension of mobile services but also in potential legal action.
PTA warned that users have limited time left to comply. To avoid any major setbacks, citizens should check the status of their mobile phones on the DIRBS portal and register accordingly if necessary. The DIRBS system was initiated to control the use of smuggled and counterfeit mobile phones in Pakistan, by ensuring that every handset is thoroughly documented. This initiative enhances national security, protects consumers from fraud, and increases government revenues realized from legal imports.
In this move, PTA aims to develop a transparent mobile market and verify all devices currently in circulation and widely used by citizens. PTA has also initiated various awareness programs, to inform people about the simple steps of registration. Officials reaffirmed that uninterrupted mobile service will only be possible for those who register their devices in time. The regulator encouraged all mobile users to do their part to build a safe and law-abiding digital ecosystem by adhering to the rules.
