Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday emphasised the vital role of religious scholars and mosque imams in guiding society, saying their counsel is sought during times of joy, sorrow, and societal challenges.
She revealed that the government has received nearly 70,000 registration applications from across the province. Under the initiative, each registered imam will receive Rs25,000 monthly directly into their bank accounts through the Honorarium Card. Until February 2026, payments will be made via pay orders. After the cards are fully issued, funds can be withdrawn from Bank of Punjab ATMs. The government plans to spend over Rs1.2 billion annually on this welfare program. The chief minister highlighted the important role of Ulema in society, emphasizing that religious scholars deserve recognition and respect. She noted that Punjab is home to nearly 80,000 mosques representing all sects.
Addressing concerns and misinformation about the program, CM Maryam Nawaz clarified that the honorarium card is a transparent welfare initiative aimed at promoting religious harmony and social stability. She stressed that countering extremism and preventing religious division requires cooperation between the state and religious leaders.
The chief minister also warned that the honorarium will be suspended for any imam involved in activities against national interests or implicated in moral or financial misconduct. She called disruptive elements spreading chaos in the name of religion “poison for society” and reaffirmed that the state will hold offenders accountable. The initiative is expected to improve welfare for imams while fostering unity, transparency, and trust between religious institutions and the government, ensuring that mosques remain centers of guidance and social stability.
