Snake bites surge in Thar following monsoon showers

Following recent monsoon rains, a surge in snake activity has led to an alarming rise in snake bite cases across Tharparkar district, according to the Sindh Health Department.

Nearly 200 people have been bitten by snakes so far this month in the Thar Desert region and have been taken to hospitals for treatment. Doctors say that all patients were given anti-snake venom injections. Most victims needed between 7 to 10 doses, depending on how serious the bite was. Health experts believe this sudden rise in snake bites is linked to the rainy season. After heavy rain, snakes come out of their underground burrows more often. This time of year is also their breeding season, which increases their movement and chances of contact with people.

The Thar Desert is home to over 10 types of snakes. Some of these snakes carry venom that can damage the nervous system or muscles. If not treated quickly, these bites can be life-threatening. Experts also explained that during breeding, snakes sometimes release extra venom, which makes their bites even more dangerous to humans and animals. To deal with the rising number of cases, emergency stocks of anti-venom have been sent to rural health centers. Health officials have advised people to be very careful, especially at night. They recommend wearing proper shoes and avoiding tall grass or bushes where snakes may hide.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation and encouraging people to seek help immediately in case of a bite. They have also urged rural communities to raise awareness about safety during the monsoon season.
