As the holy month of Ramadan is around the corner, the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has issued a forecast for the visibility of the crescent based on scientific assessments, astronomical calculations, and modern observational data.
Pakistan’s space agency has announced that the new moon for Ramadan will occur on February 28 at 5:45 PST. However, the crescent will not be visible due to its low altitude, young age, and small angular separation from the sun. Scientific assessments indicate that the moon will be around 12 hours old at sunset, with a 7-degree angular separation and a 5-degree altitude, making visibility impossible even with optical aid.
As a result, Sha’ban is expected to complete 30 days, and the first fast in Pakistan will likely be observed on March 2. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, the moon’s position and atmospheric conditions suggest that Ramadan will begin on March 1.
Astronomical models also predict that the Shawwal moon will be visible on March 30, meaning Eid ul Fitr in Pakistan is expected on March 31. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will confirm the moon sighting based on testimonies from across the country before making an official announcement.
Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department also projected March 2 as the start of Ramadan. The month will be observed with religious devotion, with millions fasting from dawn to sunset. Charity, food distribution, and communal iftars will mark the month, as people set up roadside stalls to help others break their fasts.
