Recent Iranian strikes on merchant vessels off the coast of Oman have left at least three Indian seafarers dead and nearly 20 others injured, highlighting a troubling escalation in maritime insecurity in the region.
According to Indian media reports, a Marshall Islands-flagged ship, MKD Vium, came under a drone attack about 52 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat in Oman. The incident resulted in casualties among crew members. The Indian embassy in Oman confirmed that one Indian national on board MKD Vium lost his life.
In addition, two more Indian nationals were killed while serving as crew members on the Palau-flagged oil tanker Skylight. Reports state that Iranian forces targeted the Skylight in Omani waters over the weekend, further escalating maritime security concerns in the region. Meanwhile, the broader conflict continues to widen. Following American and Israeli strikes on Tehran, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on American air bases in Gulf countries. US authorities have confirmed that four American soldiers were killed in these strikes.
At the same time, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for targeting at least 500 Israeli and American military and strategic sites during the recent hostilities. Reports also indicate missile and drone activity in several Gulf nations where US forces maintain a presence, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.
As a result, regional security has entered a critical phase. Shipping routes in the Gulf remain under close watch due to fears of further disruptions. Moreover, governments across the region have heightened security measures to protect both military installations and civilian assets.
