A powerful thunderstorm and heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Lahore last night, leaving two people dead and 24 others injured, while nine buildings suffered partial damage, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed on Friday.
The alert will remain in place until May 4, with warnings of further bad weather and potential damage in several areas. According to PDMA, nine buildings in different parts of the province have already been damaged due to strong winds that came with the recent downpour. The authority fears more damage could occur if the weather continues in the same pattern.
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain for many major cities of Punjab during the week, including the possibility of urban flooding and damage to infrastructure. The PDMA also highlighted risks of landslides in hilly regions like Murree and Galiyat, where continuous rain may loosen soil and rocks. Director General of PDMA Punjab Irfan Ali Kathia advised the public to remain indoors during intense weather conditions. He stressed that the risk of lightning is high, and people should avoid open areas to stay safe.
To support affected families, the Punjab government plans to provide financial help under its emergency relief program. Rescue teams and district administrations have been placed on high alert to handle any emergencies that may arise. The PDMA has requested citizens to take weather warnings seriously and contact their helpline at 1129 in case of any emergency or weather-related situation.
