The Punjab government has canceled its international tender for importing electric buses and will now acquire them via direct contracting, according to sources quoted by a private news channel.
A production facility is being established in Faisalabad, where initial work will begin with some imported parts, eventually transitioning to fully made-in-Pakistan electric buses. This step is part of the provincial government’s strategy to save foreign exchange and boost local employment. Both provincial and federal governments have finalized the arrangements for the facility. Officials believe the shift will create thousands of new job opportunities in the province, particularly in the industrial and technical sectors.
To ensure international quality standards, the government will work with a globally recognized company for technical support. The aim is to maintain the durability, safety, and efficiency of the new buses.
The Punjab government has set a target to roll out the first batch of locally manufactured electric buses by September this year. These buses will contribute to a more eco-friendly and modern public transport system in cities across the province.
Currently, 27 electric buses from the Chinese company Yutong are already operating successfully in Lahore. This local production move is expected to expand the availability of electric buses and reduce reliance on foreign imports in the long term.
The project reflects the government’s commitment to green technology, self-sufficiency, and economic growth through industrial development.
