These are the new vehicle import rules for foreign visitors

The federal government now permits foreign visitors to import cars duty-free for up to three months under new automotive import regulations, aiming to boost tourism.

To make travel easier for foreign visitors, particularly those who are traveling by road, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) issued SRO 1649 and 1650 of 2024.

The same car can return to Pakistan for up to three months in a year, which benefits foreign travel agents as well.

In some circumstances, if a carnet de passage or bank guarantee is presented, automobiles may be left for up to 14 days following re-entry into the nation.

An extension of up to six months may be granted by the FBR in cases when visitors are unable to export the car before the deadline.

The FBR has strengthened the Baggage Rules 2006 in addition to these tourist-friendly modifications in order to stop commercial abuse.

Vehicle import rules for foreign visitors in Pakistan

In the past, Pakistanis living abroad could import products in commercial quantities and have them released after paying the duty and penalty.

However, in order to prevent commercial abuse of duty-free rights, customs agents would fully confiscate such goods under the new norms and regulations.

Tourists who provide a Carnet de Passage or a bank guarantee are permitted to bring cars under the new regulations.

This makes it possible to temporarily import the car without having to pay customs taxes. The visitor is required to provide a declaration upon arrival at the airport attesting to the fact that the car will not be sold or transferred while in Pakistan.

A car may remain in the nation for a maximum of three months, with the option of a three-month extension if a legitimate carnet or bank guarantee is presented.

Rich tourists, like Middle Eastern aristocracy, who bring expensive cars on hunting excursions, are the main beneficiaries of this regulation. However, this service will also be helpful to overland travelers that enter Pakistan by vehicle.
