Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed while addressing an event at Utah Valley University.
The conservative activist had become a major figure in US politics, playing a central role in building support for Donald Trump among younger voters. According to officials, the shooting happened as Kirk was speaking during a question-and-answer session. Video from the event showed him seated under a tent when a single gunshot rang out, after which he collapsed as panic spread through the audience. Security personnel rushed him away from the scene.
The university reported that the gunshot came from a building roughly 200 yards away, leading authorities to close the campus for the rest of the day. Reactions poured in swiftly from across the political spectrum. Former President Donald Trump called Kirk a legendary figure who had understood the heart of America’s youth better than anyone else. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the attack as vile and urged Americans to reject political violence in every form.
Witnesses, including former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, described the terrifying moments when the crowd dropped to the ground and scrambled for safety. Kirk had co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, using his media presence and speaking tours to champion conservative values, challenge liberal voices on campuses, and influence debates on issues such as immigration and faith. His sudden death has left a significant void in right-wing activism, with tributes highlighting his impact on shaping political discourse among young Americans.
