Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam is reportedly being considered for a comeback to the T20I squad in the upcoming Asia Cup, according to a sensational report in local media.
Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of both the T20I and ODI series against the West Indies due to an injury he suffered during the T20I leg. Following the setback, the PCB has directed him to report to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for full rehabilitation. Fakhar’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup remains uncertain. Sources confirm that the board is closely monitoring his recovery, but is also preparing backup plans in case he does not regain fitness in time.
In such a case, former captain Babar Azam is under strong consideration for a return to the squad. His inclusion, however, depends on his performance in the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies. If he performs well, he could make a comeback. Recently, Babar, along with Mohammad Rizwan and Naseem Shah, held a meeting with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the second T20I in Karachi.
The final squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is expected to be announced in the second week of August. The tournament kicks off on 9 September with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong. Pakistan will begin their campaign on 12 September against Oman, followed by a high-voltage clash with India on 14 September. Their last group match is on 17 September against UAE.
Eight teams are taking part in the tournament, split into two groups. Pakistan is in Group A with India, UAE, and Oman. Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong. The Super Four stage will begin on 20 September.
