Forbes recognizes Suthra Punjab as global waste management model

The American magazine Forbes has praised the Punjab government’s ‘Suthra Punjab’ (Clean Punjab) program.

The Suthra Punjab program has emerged as the world’s largest integrated waste management system, providing an effective solution to Punjab’s waste problems in just eight months. The initiative collects 50000 tons of waste daily, cleans streets across the province, and has significantly reduced pollution.

Moreover, the program has created over 100,000 jobs and ensured regular waste collection services for millions of residents for the first time. It was presented at COP30, where global leaders recognized it as a model for integrated waste management and climate action. The initiative offers a learning opportunity for other countries and sets a benchmark for effective urban waste management practices.

The success of Suthra Punjab is supported by a three-tier financing structure combining public and private resources. Modest user fees encourage community participation and co-ownership. Seed grants from the government support public services such as street sweeping, while carbon credits and revenue from waste-to-energy projects generate additional funding.

All funds are managed transparently through an escrow account under the supervision of the provincial waste authority. This ensures accountability and proper utilization of resources while maintaining the program’s sustainability. The program’s results demonstrate that efficient planning, strong public-private collaboration, and modern waste management techniques can transform urban cleanliness and environmental standards. Residents benefit from cleaner streets, better public health, and reliable waste disposal services, while the government strengthens its climate action commitments.

Overall, Suthra Punjab provides a replicable model for other regions seeking sustainable urban waste solutions. Its combination of technology, community engagement, and transparent financing has turned it into a globally recognized example of successful waste management and environmental stewardship.
