Karachi traffic police rolls out e-challan system

The e-challan system has been formally launched in Karachi, marking a major shift in the city’s traffic management.

Speaking at a seminar held at a private hotel, IG Sindh emphasized that citizens must adhere to traffic laws, while DIG Traffic explained that the system is designed to help reduce road accidents. Police officials also shared that the driving licence system has been upgraded, with more than 300,000 citizens now obtaining online licences, a step aimed at strengthening overall traffic management.

Despite the launch, several stakeholders expressed concerns about the initiative, pointing out that issuing challans in a city where infrastructure is already in poor condition raises questions about fairness and implementation. However, authorities believe the system will play a key role in promoting discipline on the roads and making travel safer for all citizens.

The new system will issue automated challans supported by photo and video evidence, which will then be delivered directly to violators’ homes via post. In addition, people will be able to check their challan details through the official traffic police mobile app, making the process more accessible and transparent.

Authorities emphasized that the main purpose of the initiative is not only to collect fines but to encourage responsible driving and prevent accidents. They urged citizens to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid penalties and unnecessary hassle. By improving both enforcement and the licence system, officials aim to create safer roads in Karachi and reduce the burden of accidents that affect thousands of families every year. The traffic police are hopeful that the e-challan system will set a new standard for discipline and accountability on Karachi’s busy roads.
