The night sky will deliver its biggest show of 2025 as the year’s brightest and closest Supermoon, known as the “Beaver Moon,” appears on November 4 and 5 (Tuesday and Wednesday).
The sky is set to put on a beautiful show this week as the Super Beaver Moon rises, offering a brighter and larger view than usual. This full moon, known as the Beaver Moon, comes from Native American and early colonial traditions, marking the time when people prepared beaver traps before winter. This year, the moon will appear especially large because it will be at its closest point to Earth, coming within about 221,817 miles.
Although the moon does not physically grow in size, its closeness can make it look up to 14 percent bigger and nearly 30 percent brighter. According to NASA, this closeness will make the Supermoon stand out clearly in the night sky. Skywatchers can enjoy the stunning view when the moon rises on Tuesday evening, November 4, with another chance to see it the following night.
Experts say the moon will look even more impressive near the horizon due to the natural Moon Illusion effect, which makes it appear larger against buildings and trees. Along with the Supermoon, the Taurid meteor showers will also add beauty to the sky. While this month may not have very heavy meteor activity, the Northern and Southern Taurids, along with the Leonids, will still send occasional bright, slow-moving fireballs across the night sky. Meteor experts say these bursts will keep stargazers excited through the week.
