In Oct 2023, the Saudi government took an initiative and allowed women across the world to perform Hajj without a Mahram. Now, conditional permission has been given to Pakistani women as well after the Council of Islamic Ideology hinted at going ahead with it.
In recent news, Pakistani women have also been given permission to perform Hajj without a Mahram. According to the Jaffria, Shafii, and Maliki school of thoughts, there’s a provision for a woman to perform Hajj without a Mahram.
The Ministry had already consulted with the Council before on this matter. The Council then gave a written reply to the Ministry that stated that women can be allowed to perform Hajj if the husband or parents allow her according to Jaffria, Shaifi, and Maliki school of thought.
On the other hand, Hajj is not an obligation or farz for a woman if she doesn’t have a Mahram such as a husband or parents according to Hanafi and Hanbali schools of thoughts.
However, CII has stated that women can perform Umrah or Hajj without the presence of a Mahram with them provided that they stay in the company or group of trustworthy women according to several schools of thought.
